What happened
WHO’s 4 November 2026 global estimates report that about one in four adolescents aged 11–17 had no day with at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity in the preceding week.
Verified findings
- The estimate corresponds to approximately 240 million adolescents; it does not mean all of them performed no physical movement whatsoever.
- The analysis drew on 389 population-based surveys from 140 countries and territories covering more than 3.2 million adolescents.
- Adolescents reported an average of 2.7 days with at least 60 minutes of activity per week; only 14% met that daily threshold on all seven days.
- Girls reported zero qualifying days more frequently than boys (28% versus 22%). WHO describes little global improvement over 15 years.
Clinical and public-health implications
- School health programmes should assess access to safe play, active travel, sports participation and barriers faced by girls rather than blaming individual children.
- CHC and primary-care teams can discuss enjoyable age-appropriate activity and screen-time patterns during routine adolescent visits.
- The findings are population-level survey estimates, not individual diagnostic thresholds or evidence that a specific intervention alone prevents disease.
Interpretation and limitations
Figures and recommendations should be interpreted in their original study or programme context. This article is a clinical/public-health news explainer, not an individual prescription or an announcement of a new Indian regulatory approval. Local authorities and updated clinical protocols remain decisive.
