WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases Report 2026: 63 Countries Achieve Elimination Milestones

What happened

WHO’s 4 November 2026 midterm assessment of its 2021–2030 neglected tropical disease road map documents major gains alongside persistent surveillance and funding gaps.

Verified findings

  • By June 2026, 63 countries had eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease, compared with 42 at the end of 2020; this does not imply elimination of all NTDs.
  • WHO estimated 1.41 billion people needed NTD interventions in 2024, 19% fewer than in 2020 and 36% fewer than in 2010.
  • The report describes only 10 human Guinea worm cases in 2025, while dengue cases reached 15.1 million in 2024.
  • NTD resources remained approximately 30% below pre-pandemic levels; just three disease-specific indicators met their 2025 milestones.

Clinical and public-health implications

  • Integrate syndromic surveillance, early referral, vector control and disease-specific programmes into primary care rather than relying on one-off campaigns.
  • Document suspected dengue warning signs, dehydration, bleeding and other urgent complications according to locally approved guidance.
  • Do not assume that elimination validation in one country removes the need for surveillance, or that emerging therapies are approved for all patients.

Interpretation and limitations

Figures and recommendations should be interpreted in their original study or programme context. This article is a clinical/public-health news explainer, not an individual prescription or an announcement of a new Indian regulatory approval. Local authorities and updated clinical protocols remain decisive.
