Practical Audit Method
Choose representative clinical areas and observation periods, define opportunities using the WHO Five Moments framework and give non-punitive feedback. Document availability of alcohol-based hand rub and handwashing facilities separately from observed adherence. Gloves do not replace hand hygiene.
Hand hygiene is a fundamental component of infection prevention in healthcare. WHO’s Five Moments framework identifies critical points before touching a patient, before a clean or aseptic procedure, after body fluid exposure risk, after touching a patient, and after touching patient surroundings.
Practical Hospital Checklist
Make alcohol-based hand rub available at point of care, maintain soap and clean water where required, train staff, and conduct observation-based audits with supportive feedback. Gloves do not replace hand hygiene. Use soap and water when hands are visibly soiled and in situations specified by local infection-prevention guidance.
CHC and PHC Relevance
Include emergency rooms, dressing rooms, labour rooms, immunisation areas and laboratories in routine quality-improvement reviews. Audit compliance rather than assuming supplies alone prove safe practice.
