Updated 30 October 2026. Sponsored DNB Post-MBBS is a formal postgraduate training pathway for eligible regular government in-service doctors, not a paid direct-admission scheme. This guide separates historical sponsored-seat rules from the distinct 2026 in-service seat notice.
1. What is a Sponsored DNB seat?
NBEMS-accredited hospitals may offer designated sponsored seats for eligible doctors nominated by qualifying government employers. The seats are allocated through the applicable centralized merit-based counselling process, not by private agents or direct purchase. NBEMS states that its sponsored-seat scheme began in 2020.
2. Who may be eligible?
The official 2025 sponsored-seat notice required candidates for Post-MBBS DNB to have qualified NEET-PG 2025, to be regularly employed by a sponsoring government organization, and to secure employer permissions. The 2024 notice also specified an NMC-recognized MBBS degree and permanent medical registration. These are historical session-specific criteria: candidates must check the applicable 2026 sponsored counselling handbook for current eligibility and dates rather than treating an older NEET-PG year as current.
3. Employer responsibilities
- Regular service: Verify substantive appointment and sponsorship eligibility with the appointing authority.
- NOC and study leave: Obtain permissions in the prescribed format before the deadline; an informal recommendation letter may not suffice.
- Stipend: Under the 2025 sponsored scheme, the sponsoring government organization bears the stipend for the entire DNB training period. Confirm the current session’s financial obligations and service bond, if applicable.
- Return to service: Check departmental posting, deputation, lien and bond requirements in writing.
4. How sponsored seats are created
The 2025 NBEMS indicative seat notice described hospital requirements including at least three non-sponsored seats in the specialty, a year of accreditation, additional approved faculty and inclusion of non-sponsored seats in counselling. An indicative seat matrix is not a guarantee that every seat will be offered in final counselling.
5. Counselling and merit
For the 2025 sponsored scheme, NBEMS stated that allocation takes place through centralized merit-based counselling according to inter-se merit. Candidates should check registration, choice filling, seat matrix, allotment, reporting, fee and document-verification instructions in the current NBEMS counselling handbook. NEET-PG qualification alone does not guarantee allotment.
6. Important 2026 distinction: in-service seats
The NBEMS notice dated 21 October 2026 addresses counselling and joining of candidates selected for in-service DNB Post-MBBS / NBEMS Diploma seats through State Government, ESI, Railways, PSUs and AFMS counselling. This is not evidence that a fresh centralized Sponsored DNB Post-MBBS application window has opened. The competent counselling authority and applicable MCC timelines govern the relevant in-service process.
7. After allotment
Joining and trainee registration can involve the Online Portal for Joining and Registration (OPJR), a hospital joining report, trainee self-appraisal and institutional verification. The June 2026 NBEMS notice about OPJR explicitly concerned trainees of the 2025 sponsored admission session; it is not a new 2026 application announcement.
8. Document checklist
- MBBS degree, internship completion and medical registration.
- Applicable NEET-PG qualification proof and counselling registration.
- Regular appointment/service certificate, employer sponsorship letter and NOC.
- Sanctioned study leave/deputation and stipend undertaking as required.
- Identity, category and other documents specified in the current handbook.
9. Common mistakes
Do not confuse sponsored seats with ordinary MCC AIQ DNB seats or with state-retained in-service quotas. Do not infer that contract doctors qualify automatically. Do not pay a private intermediary promising guaranteed admission.
