WHO Ebola Tumaini Trial: Oxford–Serum Institute and Moderna Bundibugyo Vaccine Candidates

MedBodh evidence-based update | 5 November 2026. Source announcement dated 4 November 2026.

What happened

On 4 November 2026 WHO announced that expert groups recommended adding two Bundibugyo-virus vaccine candidates to the ongoing Tumaini trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, subject to national approvals.

Verified findings

  • The candidates are ChAdOx1 developed by Oxford with Serum Institute of India and Moderna mRNA-1469; these are investigational candidates, not newly licensed vaccines.
  • Tumaini uses ring vaccination among contacts of confirmed cases. Four vaccination rings were already in place when WHO reported the update.
  • The separate PARTNERS therapeutic trial evaluates MBP134, remdesivir and their combination, with maftivimab planned; this does not establish their efficacy.
  • WHO expects initial treatment-trial findings in coming months and vaccine trial results in early 2027, not immediate clinical availability.

Clinical and public-health implications

  • For frontline teams, promptly identify suspected viral haemorrhagic fever, apply infection prevention measures, isolate safely and notify the appropriate public-health authority.
  • Do not prescribe investigational vaccines or antiviral regimens outside authorised research or protocols. Distinguish Bundibugyo-virus vaccine research from established Zaire ebolavirus vaccination evidence.
  • Trial endpoints, ethical consent and regulatory approvals must be monitored before any treatment recommendation changes.

Interpretation and limitations

Figures and recommendations should be interpreted in their original study or programme context. This article is a clinical/public-health news explainer, not an individual prescription or an announcement of a new Indian regulatory approval. Local authorities and updated clinical protocols remain decisive.
