The World Health Organization (WHO) has scheduled an EPI-WIN webinar on 28 October 2026 focused on preparing for respiratory virus circulation during the northern hemisphere winter, particularly influenza and COVID-19 prevention and control. The event page says WHO will share prevention resources and launch 2026–27 communication materials. This is an event preview and evidence-based readiness guide, not a claim that a webinar scheduled for later today has already produced new findings.
What WHO is discussing
- The importance of protection against seasonal influenza and COVID-19.
- Practical steps to protect communities and people at elevated risk.
- Communication resources to support health-literacy campaigns.
- Experiences from people and families affected by influenza.
What to prioritize in clinics and CHCs
- Recognition: Ask about fever, cough, sore throat and relevant exposure, but remember symptoms overlap and cannot reliably distinguish influenza from COVID-19 without appropriate testing.
- Infection prevention: Encourage respiratory hygiene, hand cleaning, ventilation, masks for symptomatic people and appropriate facility infection-prevention practices.
- Vaccination: Review current local influenza and COVID-19 vaccination recommendations, availability and patient eligibility with national/state programme guidance.
- High-risk groups: Pay special attention to pregnancy, older adults, infants and young children, immunocompromised patients and people with significant chronic illnesses.
- Referral: Assess oxygenation and red flags including breathing difficulty, altered mental state, dehydration or rapid deterioration; escalate when clinically indicated.
- Antibiotic stewardship: Avoid routine antibiotics for uncomplicated viral infections unless there is a clinical indication of bacterial disease.
WHO/Europe’s 23 October seasonal reminder
In a separate 23 October 2026 release, WHO/Europe emphasized annual influenza vaccination for high-risk populations and healthcare workers, alongside simple prevention behaviours. Those regional seasonal observations are not a forecast of India’s exact influenza peak; Indian vaccination access and recommendations should be checked locally.
Patient-friendly counselling in 30 seconds
“If you are sick, reduce close contact with others. Cover coughs, clean hands, ventilate indoor spaces and consider a mask when symptomatic. Ask your clinician whether influenza and current COVID-19 vaccination guidance applies to you. Seek urgent assessment for breathlessness or other serious symptoms.”
What remains uncertain
This article does not assert a new variant, a local outbreak or any India-wide change in vaccine eligibility. It does not replace local public-health advisories. WHO’s event timing is provided on the official event page; consult that page for any timezone or schedule changes.
