Dates and verified 2026 theme
WHO’s World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) runs from 18 to 24 November 2026. The theme is ‘One Health, one action: Prevent AMR now’. This is a preview published on 2 November, not a claim that the week has already begun. It is distinct from MedSafetyWeek, which addresses adverse medicine reaction reporting during 2–8 November.
What antimicrobial resistance means
Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond adequately to medicines designed to treat them. In daily hospital practice, bacterial resistance may lead to delayed effective treatment, prolonged admission and more complicated infections. Resistance can emerge through microbial evolution and is accelerated by inappropriate antimicrobial exposure and weak infection-prevention systems.
What WHO is asking sectors to do
WHO links human health, animal health, agriculture, food safety and environmental stewardship. Its 2026–2036 Global Action Plan, adopted at the World Health Assembly in May 2026, emphasises infection prevention, vaccination, water and sanitation, responsible antimicrobial use, surveillance and sustainable national programmes. The campaign is a call for coordinated action, not a new antibiotic prescription guideline.
Five practical CHC priorities
First, use antibiotics only when a bacterial infection is clinically suspected or established and guideline indications are met. Second, obtain relevant specimens before therapy when feasible without delaying urgent care. Third, document indication, allergy history, agent, route and planned review. Fourth, review response and available culture results, and de-escalate or stop therapy when appropriate. Fifth, strengthen hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, safe injection practice and vaccination.
Avoid common stewardship errors
Do not prescribe antibiotics routinely for uncomplicated viral upper respiratory infections. Do not assume broad-spectrum therapy is always safer. Avoid automatic continuation after discharge without reviewing indication and duration. For suspected sepsis, meningitis and other serious bacterial syndromes, prompt appropriate empiric therapy and urgent escalation remain essential; stewardship must not delay lifesaving treatment.
Measuring improvement
Useful local measures include documentation of indication, antibiotic review within the hospital’s agreed interval, culture sampling when indicated, hand-hygiene audit findings and tracking medicine stockouts. Data should be interpreted in clinical context; raw antibiotic volume alone cannot establish inappropriate prescribing.
What is not claimed
The WHO campaign page describes a global awareness theme and broad actions. It does not impose a new India-specific legal rule, endorse an exact antibiotic dose or replace national treatment guidance. CHCs should use applicable Indian protocols and local antibiograms where available.
